Encaustic Workshop with Karen Meadows

If you have wondered what “Encaustic” painting is all about, this workshop will teach you all you need to know to make several pieces of art and get started on your own.  The term Encaustic comes from the Greek “To Burn In”.  It is a mixture of bees wax and damar resin (from tree bark).

Included in workshop:

·       Brief history of Encaustic Powerpoint

·       Using a torch

·       Layering

·       Mark making

·       Collage

·       Intarsia (like wood inlay)

Karen will provide everything: pancake burners, wax, colorants, oil paint, tools, torches, and wood panels.

We heat the wax, color it, and paint with it in the liquid form.  Bring paper ephemera to collage with if you wish.

This magical material allows us to create texture, embed materials, draw and carve into, and whatever your imagination brings!

You can expect to be amazed by the transparent beauty of wax, while learning techniques while letting the wax surprise and delight you!

Karen has been working with encaustics for over 15 years, and has developed many techniques, and allows for experimentation and happy accidents, fun for all!

She has taught over a dozen workshops in the Bay Area.

Participants will create 2 ready to hang works of art. Cost of workshop is $130 plus a $40 materials fee. For both days the cost is $240 plus an $80 materials fee.

Sign up or contact Karen with any questions, through her web site.
